The first Sunday of the year had brought very mild, but foggy, weather so our plan to cycle up to the northern part of Gwent was abandoned. Looking at the forecast it looked like visibility would be very poor so instead a ride along the cycle track to Blaenavon was taken on. This route follows the old rail track, it is a steady but relentless climb to  a height of 355 metres. Years ago, The Brothers cycled along here on the old rough rail ballast but in the last ten years it has been turned into a smooth asphalt path. There were many cyclists out this morning , something we have not experienced ever up here, again more evidence of the Bradley Wiggins phenomenon! The weather changed near Abersychan, the mist had gone and there were clear views all around! In Blaenavon the new Rhymney Brewery was viewed, along with the old iron works. A fast sprint down the valley then took place, the wind was with us and before long Pontypool Park was reached. The ride was finished off through New Inn and the old abandoned road to Croesyceiliog....36km with 520 metres of ascent.
