WHITECASTLE OR BUST! - and a visit to Cefn Ila.

Temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius and a biting cold wind greeted us as we cycled out from Croesyceiliog to New Inn and then along the lanes through Glascoed and Monkswood. It was quiet for a Sunday morning and there were quite a few cyclists out. After warming up in Usk with hot sausage-rolls and coffee our original plan to cycle to Whitecastle was abandoned in favour of a ride that would take us to visit Cefn Illa. The old Cefn Illa house, documented here, has long gone. However, the stables and out buildings are being demolished and for some strange reason a new building, to accommodate the bats, is being built. The whole area is now owned by the Woodland Trust and there are some impressive large trees in the grounds of the old house. Making our way out we talked to the gentleman who owns the old farm house, we were amazed that he is a reader of our website and recognised us as the Bikebrothers! After that first time encounter with stardom the climb up to Glascoed golf club was taken, from here we cycled down to Glascoed village and up to New Inn and home via the old abandoned road....20 miles
