A CLUBMAN'S RIDE TO BLAENAVON

30.01.11

Sunday morning and it was sub zero temperatures when I met Nick in Croesyceiliog. Last weeks pneumatic drilling ride on the canal tow-path had taken its toll on my front hub, there was a unhealthy noise coming from it! - square balls were diagnosed so I went back to the house for a quick wheel change. All was well as we carried on to the cycle-track that heads up the valley to Blaenavon. Following the course of an old railway we had  a good ride to Pontypool and then up into open country, our only hazards were dog-walkers and a Shetland pony that liked the taste of Nick's pannier bag! Over 1000ft of climbing on this asphalt path makes quite hard work in the cold but it was not long before we arrived in Blaenavon to see that the old railway bridge had been demolished. A fast sprint along the main road was enjoyed back down the valley taking in Pontypool park and its famous gates. The ride was finished off along the old abandoned road from New Inn to Croesyceiliog....25 miles.
