THE HOLLY AND MISTLETOE RUN

18.12.11

It was a freezing cold Sunday morning a few days before the winter Solstice as I braved the icy roads to meet Nick in Newport City who had just finished his night-shift at Maindee Fire Station. We quickly warmed up, cycling out of the city and up the Cat's Ash road. The sun shone briefly but it still remained cold as the lane that winds it's way up the Usk vale was taken. Again I enjoyed the ride on my Langdale winter bike, thank goodness for 531 tubing! Nick was riding his Tom Crowther fixed and before long we were in the village of Llantrisant. The idea was to find Yule treasures and try to get into the Christmas spirit! The old Royal Oak pub is now a private residence and we talked to the owner for a while. A few miles later we visited Usk and drank some hot coffee from my flask. Llanbadoc church is quite impressive standing amongst tall cedar trees and was the first time I had actually visited it. Our 'traditional' route home took us back  through Prescoed and Coed-y-Paen where we visited the library, an old telephone call box!
