A TASTE OF SPRING - A CLUBMAN'S RIDE TO GAERLLYWD
Good weather looked like it was on it's way as The Brothers left Ashford Hall, Croesyceiliog, it was 09.00 on a Sunday, it was a bit chilly to start but the Sun shone and soon warmed us up a bit. An even better warm up was the short, stiff, climb up to Croesyllywarch. Once over the top, the Usk valley could been seen in the sunshine, this time without any evidence of flooding. The long steep climb to the Wentwood forest beckoned, although we have descended this road on numerous occasions, we have only climbed up here a few times. The road starts gradually but then turns very steeply up to the ridge before the forest. Here a nice black puppy greeted us with it's tail wagging. The road to Gaerllywdd was taken and here the main road to Usk was joined. It was quite amazing, there were many cyclists out, and on the descent, there were a constant stream of hellos and waves to the other riders. Something we have not experienced before! Continuing the climbing, the route home took us through Usk and to the golf course near Glascoed that over looks the Llandegfeth Reservoir. The ride was finished off through New Inn and the old abandoned road to Croesyceiliog, where we called in for coffee at our mother's house....46 km with 865 metres of ascent.
