It was a blustery Sunday morning as we cycled out from Croesyceiliog, the road through New Inn, and Glascoed was taken. At Monkswood we turned up Rumble Street and headed towards Nantyderry. After crossing the main Abergavenny road a route discussion took place (i.e. Lost!). owever, the canal was then crossed and the mountain lane upward to Goose and Cuckoo Inn was ascended. From this remote pub on the side of the mountain the asphalt road turned into a rough forest track. As the ride continued through the forest , the scenery looked like anywhere in remote Mid-Wales. A nice hot cup of coffee from our flasks was followed by a split in our routes, Nick took the old rough-stuff track while I cycled up the forest track. About a mile up the road the tracks met just before the open mountain over to Blaenavon. An icy-cold head-wind met us here and it was a dramatic ride with spectacular scenery to Blaenavon. From here it was a fast descent down the valley, the 10 miles home were made via Abersychan, Pontypool Park and the old abandoned road from New Inn to Croesyceiliog....23 miles.
