Bad weather had been forecast for the Sunday but as I cycled toward Newport City all was well. I was to meet Nick, who had just finished a night shift at Maindee Fire Station. Our route took us out of the city on the canal up the 'fourteen locks'. After a few miles along the tow-path Cwmcarn was reached. The road up through the forest of  mountain-bike heaven was splendid that morning and Mynydd Henllys was quickly reached. We climbed up to the Mynydd Henllys ridge and then cycled north along the rough track on Mynydd Maen at 500m. A steep, rough, descent to the old abandoned reservoirs of Blaen Bran opened my eyes to a part of Cwmbran I have not been to for many years. Only a few minutes from our houses the other side of the valley this is an unknown but delightful area of our home town. Cycling through Upper Cwmbran square was like going through a foreign land. A fast descent down the valley was enjoyed to then arrive home for lunch at 13:00....30 miles.
