HAFODRYNYS RIDGE RIDERS

07/09/08

The weather had turned pleasant that Sunday morning so it was time for a trip up the valley to Pontypool and then on the old abandoned road to Hafodyrynys. My chainset needed slight adjustment on the way, but we quickly reached the old concrete structure that was the washery of the Hafodyrynys colliery where many years before our grandfather, Bert Jeffries, worked. The ride took us up the woodland path which quickly escapes the lower urban surroundings. We could have been in Mid-Wales as we cycled through trees with the sun shining. This track reaches 400 metres before dropping down to the lower valley, from here there is a track over the old coal tips which have been landscaped. The old Glyn Pit engine house is here, they are trying to preserve it because of its historical value, but unfortunately that means putting a large fence around it, so it can not viewed properly! From here it was a quick ride home via Pontypool and the cycle track....27 miles.
