OVER THE BRITISH

13.05.12

A not bad Sunday morning saw us leaving Ashford Hall, Croesyceiliog, to take the cycle-track out of Cwmbran to Pontypool, here we met a recently retired gentleman from Crawley, near London. He had moved down to Wales two weeks previously and was enjoying the countryside, although he knew Wales was hilly, it was a bit of a shock to him that every where you go there is a climb! The steep road from Plascoed to Pantygasseg is a definite morning wake up call! This ascent is a springboard out of the urban sprawl and onto the open mountain of the massive British plateau. A good spectacular ride was enjoyed to the summit at nearly 500 metres and views of all the valleys around, the English counties of Somerset and Devon were taken in. After a fast descent to the Varteg I had my first puncture of the year. Quickly repairing it, the ride carried on through the pleasant Pontypool park, here there was a triathlon in progress and there were many bicycles lined up outside the swimming pool hall waiting for the participants to finish the swim section. Our ride was finished off through New Inn and an amble along the old abandoned road to Croesyceiliog....20 miles.
