OVER THE BRITISH
A Misty Mountain Hop was planned for a drizzly Sunday morning. The route took us along the pleasant cycle-path through Pontypool. We then turned off the track and headed up the steep climb to the tiny village of Pantygasseg. The road to the British mountain road is not far from the urban sprawl of Torfaen, but in a few miles it turns in to a remote mountain path. The impressive views of the Severn Estuary and Brecon Beacons were not on offer today as the mist swept down over the mountain, it was however an enjoyable climb up to the almost unrecognisable 475 metre summit. The descent off the mountain used to be a fast ride where maximum speeds could be achieved but the last 15 years have not been kind to this road and it is in terrible condition, great care had to be taken down this pothole-strewn track! The main road was taken back home with a good sprint being enjoyed back through Pontypool, New Inn and the old abandoned road to Croesyceiliog....30 km with 575 metres of ascent.
