WHITECASTLE FOR LUNCH.
After a couple of weeks of bad weather our Sunday morning venture took us out to Usk and then along the wind-swept lanes to the village of Llandenny. The pace was brisk to Raglan; from here the wintry lanes of northern Gwent did not loose any of their magic compared to the summer. The mystic maze of paths brought us like a magic carpet, to the little village of Llantilio Croessenny. The rough Offa's Dyke path to Whitecastle had been turned into a terrible state by the bad weather. We came to the castle which has free access in the winter months. We ate our lunch in the castle courtyard before climbing up the tower to take in the view. Our route back was a pleasant amble down the rich smelling roads to Llanarth, Croes Llanfair and Goytre. We carried on the quiet road to the Star Inn where the canal beckoned, an easy and traffic free route home....40 miles.
