SUNDAY RIDE TO WHITECASTLE

21.03.10

As the weather turned warmer it was now time to turn to the sweet smelling lanes of Northern Gwent. From Croesyceiliog the road took us out to New Inn and then to the dark lanes of Monkswood. Usk was visited briefly but we were not the only ones out that Sunday afternoon, the cars were franticly driving around with no apparent reason. However, within a few minutes the quiet lanes were achieved. Llandenny was the springboard for this classic ride. There was no dawdling today as we sped towards Raglan and then on the smokey road toward Llantilio Croessenny. The rough Offas Dyke track was the worse we had seen for a long time. Before long the ancient Whitecastle had been reached, thankfully Cadw, the overseers of the site, had not started charging to visit so a free view of the castle was taken. The ride down to Llanarth was a fast swoop - the lamps were lit and a pleasant ride to Goytre was enjoyed. After a while we took a shortcut along the canal towpath, there were many frogs about and they had to be avoided with great care, but the fast pace was still kept up to finish an excellent ride of 43 miles.
