The mild weather had given way to much colder conditions. As we left from our meeting point near Ashford Hall, Croesyceiliog, it was just above freezing so the roads through New Inn, Glascoed, Monkswood and to Usk were frost free on that Sunday morning. After a quick stop at the Spar shop and a chat to the friendly proprietor the cold lanes were taken again. Our route was the usual, through Llandenny and on to Raglan. It was an enjoyable ride along the winter lanes to Llantilio Croesenny and then to the Offa's Dyke track that leads to Whitecastle. Hopefully this mud-strewn track will become ridable by summer, no chance today however, as the thick mud made it probably the worst I have seen it!  After lunch in the mediaeval castle grounds there was a bitterly cold descent back to Llantilio, but we soon soon soon warmed up by the time we cycled past Llanarth House. Near Croes Llanfair a couple of mountain-bikers caught us up, after a mile or so we overtook them and for a few miles they seemed to desperately try to catch us up. Nick was quite amused at my attempts to keep them at bay, eventually losing them altogether. The ride was completed via Monkswood, Glascoed and the old abandoned New Inn to Croesyceiliog road....45miles.
